Wilfredo Castro Flores (33) was abandoned as a young child; his parents were lost in the war. He had no opportunity to go to school. He worked the carnival circuit, operating machinery. There he met a girl; they ended up getting married and having three kids. With such an unstable and seasonal job, it has been hard to make ends meet. He has come to the literacy class to try to learn to read and give his kids a better life than he had. He told me, “The first thing they ask you when you apply for a job is whether you can read. If you can’t, you don’t get the job.” He sometimes has to leave class early to take care of his garden or for a job that has come up, but he works really hard. He is in the first level.
